The Logan County Board of REALTORS® made a donation to the city of Lincoln to erect a historic sign in 2018 as its Legacy Project in connection with the Illinois Bicentennial.

The sign will acknowledge a grand social event held in Lincoln’s Memorial Park during the early 20th century called the Lincoln Chautauqua. Information about local chautauquas, including photos and maps, will preserve the history for future generations.

“We chose this project because it tells an interesting story that many people don’t know about today,” said Logan County Board of REALTORS® Association Executive Bob Kidd. “We hope the sign preserves the story and the history for years to come.”

According to Merriam-Webster.com, a chautauqua is: “any of various traveling shows and local assemblies that flourished in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that provided popular education combined with entertainment in the form of lectures, concerts and plays, and that were modeled after activities at the Chautauqua Institution of western New York.”

REALTORS® across the state are working with heart in their communities to complete projects like this to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. The project is one of more than 30 legacy projects supported by our local REALTOR® associations in the state.

Projects include fundraising for local historic home repairs and historical community murals or promoting local historical properties and societies. Illinois REALTORS® has donated land in downtown Springfield next to its headquarters to build Bicentennial Plaza – a REALTOR® Community Partnership, which is a signature project of the state bicentennial celebrations.

The association is an official endorsed partner with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission, which oversees the state’s plans for the milestone birthday.

This blog post is part of a series over the next several months covering Illinois REALTORS® local associations legacy projects leading up to the state of Illinois’ 200th Birthday. Learn more.
