Guides help REALTORS® know the advertising rules

Advertising ChecklistIllinois REALTORS® offers two advertising guides to help you market your real estate business and follow professional standards guidelines.

Professional Standards often gets inquiries about advertising guidelines. That’s because there are many state and Code of Ethics rules REALTORS® need to follow. Not following these rules can cause headaches, and even result in fines.

As you work on your advertising plan, use the new Illinois REALTORS® Advertising Checklist to make sure you are following the rules. The checklist is a step-by-step list of the questions you need to ask yourself about your advertising and marketing materials.

Illinois REALTORS®’ other popular advertising guide, “24 Things to do Do (& Not Do) When Marketing Your Business,” offers advertising dos and don’ts. Developed by Illinois REALTORS® Rebecca Carraher, who handles the Ethics Citation and the Ombudsman programs, the guide has a page devoted to best practices, and another section devoted to practices to stay away from.

You can download the brochure at the association’s website if you are a member in the association’s Pro Standards Toolkit.
