Just as the Internal Revenue Service starts accepting tax returns for the 2017 tax year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is urging consumers and business owners to take steps to protect their identities from thieves.

Through a series of free webinars and Twitter chats, the FTC is sharing tips that will help Americans protect themselves from scams — especially those involving IRS imposters.  The first is a webinar this afternoon. Find out more here.

Past scams have included threatening telephone calls from phony IRS agents, demanding consumers pay overdue tax bills or face arrest.

Sometimes victims of tax-related identity theft discover that someone has used their Social Security number to get their refund money. The situation becomes apparent when taxpayers receive a notice from the IRS indicating that more than one tax return has been filed on their behalf.
