Illinois REALTORS® lobbyists met with legislators and stakeholders last week, including members of the House Legislative Judiciary Committee, in anticipation of its consideration of two Rent Control bills, according to today’s edition of the State Capitol Report.

Lobbyists have combed through through more than 6,000 bills and 41 constitutional amendments, and they have identified many that could affect REALTORS®, landlords or private property owners. Among the issues are:

  • making “source of income” a protected class under the Illinois Human Rights Act, which would essentially mandate participation in the HUD Section 8 program,
  • rewriting the Real Estate License Act which expires at the end of 2019,
  • giving the state the ability to dictate retainage provisions in a contract between commercial property owners and contractors,
  • sealing court eviction records of tenants so landlords wouldn’t be able to see the records,
  • changing how commercial property is assessed for certain commercial property owners,
  • expanding the Property Assessment Clean Energy financing mechanism to include residential property with assessments and liens and
  • consolidating or eliminating of local taxing bodies.
