The city of Champaign is expected to consider a Residential and Commercial Property Registration program in April.
Due to REALTOR® advocacy, the current proposal is limited in scope—there are no fees or inspection requirements. The stated goal is to create a reliable ownership database to support emergency response and improve communication. REALTORS® oppose burdensome registry ordinances that negatively impact affordability and private property rights.
Discussions indicate that any future costs would likely target non-compliant landlords or those with code violations. REALTORS® support targeted code enforcement rather than broad mandates, to promote quality housing and preserve affordability.
This effort aligns with broader local sentiment to limit new financial burdens. In the recent primary, Champaign County voters rejected a proposed property tax increase to address a $2 million deficit, with 77 percent voting “no.” This reinforces the importance of protecting affordability while promoting quality housing.
Look out for an update from Illinois REALTORS® Governmental Affairs Director (GAD) Nash Oldenettel in April.
