In our latest advocacy success, members of Illinois REALTORS® helped defeat a referendum to establish home rule in the village of Crestwood.
More than 71 percent of voters opposed the referendum while 28 percent supported it, according to the Cook County Clerk. The final tally was 3,213 to 1,277.
Illinois REALTORS® Local Governmental Affairs Director Tom Joseph voiced his concerns about the negative impacts home rule would have on property owners and the real estate business. He also spoke out against a proposed crime-free ordinance requiring rental inspections and landlord licensing. The Government Affairs Committee and the Board of Directors for the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS® opposed those proposals as well. Crestwood REALTOR® and resident Myke Toscas of Century 21 Affiliated helped efforts to educate Crestwood residents through yard signs.
Illinois REALTORS® has fought numerous attempts by south suburban local governments – including a previous attempt in Crestwood – to get home rule authority.
“Illinois REALTORS® has opposed home rule with great success,” said Joseph. “And we are pleased that Crestwood voters recognized the negative impact of home rule and helped defeat this latest referendum – the only one of its kind in the state this year.”
