The state of Illinois ranked eighth in the nation for the overall administration of the 2016 national elections according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Elections Performance Index.

The Illinois State Board of Elections issued a press release last week regarding the ranking, providing a link to the Elections Performance Index (EPI) and noting the ranking “marked a steady and substantial improvement since 2010 when Illinois was ranked 39th.

The EPI uses information gathered from all 50 states for the last five national elections: 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. The information is collected in 17 categories which include measurements for election turnout, voting wait times, voting and registration problems, .

“Elections in Illinois represent a collaborative process between the many local officials who interact directly with voters and state officials who oversee election infrastructure,” said Steven S. Sandvoss, executive director of the Illinois State Board of Elections. “Illinois’ strong showing in the MIT index is evidence of the priority officials at all levels place on fair, efficient and inclusive elections here. We continue to work hard to make improvements to the election system.”
