The Kidzeum of Health and Science will hold its grand opening Saturday at 412 E. Adams St. in downtown Springfield.

The event will be held in conjunction with Kids Day at the adjacent Old Capitol Farmers Market, 4th and Adams streets. Special entertainment will include: live music, a kid-friendly cooking demonstration, a scavenger hunt, chalk art, crafts, Ben’s Bubble Show and the Rope Warrior.

Illinois REALTORS® is a proud sponsor of the museum.

What is Kidzeum all about?

The Kidzeum is designed to give children ages 2 to 12 a fun and hands-on way to learn about healthy living, nutrition, the human body, the environment, conservation and more, says Leah Wilson, Kidzeum executive director, but it will entertain family members of all ages.

Play specialists will offer additional information on specific exhibits throughout the museum, says Rachel Thompson, Kidzeum president.

Active Alex is the largest exhibit in the Kidzeum. Extending from the ground floor to the third floor, Active Alex provides climbing space and larger-than-life displays about nearsightedness, why the nose produces snot, the latest theory on taste buds and more.

One exhibit of particular interest to REALTORS® is the Healthy House on the second floor, with displays that show:

  • the effectiveness of different types of insulation in preserving heat,
  • how low-flow toilets can conserve water and
  • how sun, wind and geothermal energy can produce electricity with fewer risks for the environment.

The Kidzeum will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays noon to 5 p.m.
