Illinois REALTORS® remembers Daniel L. Goodwin, chairman and CEO of The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, Inc., who died on Friday, Jan. 19 at the age of 80.

“Dan was a pioneer and visionary in the commercial real estate industry, as well as an exceptional human being and friend,” said Inland Interim Chairman Robert H. Baum in an Inland news release announcing Goodwin’s passing.

Goodwin was an innovative leader in commercial real estate investment and finance. A former teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, he founded Inland Real Estate in 1968 and helped grow the Oak Brook-based company into one of the largest commercial real estate and finance groups in the country. He also founded the Retail Properties of American REIT.

Goodwin also left his mark in the REALTOR® organization.

In 2017, Goodwin was the first and only Illinois REALTOR® to be honored with the state association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his substantial service to the real estate industry and his lifelong commitment to fair housing for all.

In 1994, Goodwin founded New Directions Housing Corporation, a not-for-profit corporation that builds and rehabilitates affordable housing for low-income residents throughout Illinois. In 2015, Goodwin received the Good Neighbor Award from REALTOR® Magazine for his work with New Directions Housing.

Goodwin was committed to REALTOR® advocacy and was a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) RPAC Investors Hall of Fame, the Illinois REALTORS® Hall of Fame and the Chicago Association of REALTORS® Hall of Fame.

He was well-known for his civic and philanthropic work, particularly in education. Northeastern Illinois University’s College of Education and Benedictine University’s College of Business are both named after Goodwin.

He established vocational programs to help disabled students transition to the workplace and scholarship programs to help students attend college. In 2017, the Daniel L. Goodwin Scholarship Fund was established through the Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation to assist students who had gone through the Boys and Girls Club of Illinois to further their education.
