Over the last few years, Illinois REALTORS® has advocated for Chicago city and state elected leaders to make addressing the housing problem their #1 priority. A recent poll confirmed that REALTORS® were right – housing is a major concern to voters in Chicago. Those responding said that property taxes and the cost of housing topped the list of issues that concern them. Illinois REALTORS® CEO Jeff Baker told Crain that the poll is proof that Chicagoans want more action and now.
Your Illinois REALTORS® will continue advocating for the expansion of ADUs, zoning flexibility for ‘missing middle’ housing and other issues to resolve the housing problems in Chicago and throughout Illinois.
Housing costs now top crime as Chicago voters’ biggest worry, poll finds
Housing affordability tops crime on Chicago voters’ lists of concerns, results of a poll conducted for Illinois REALTORS® show.
When asked which on a list of issues is most important for the mayor and City Council to work on, the No. 1 and 3 responses were property taxes (from 23% of the people polled) and the cost of housing (18%).
“The cost of housing has overtaken almost every other economic concern that people have,” said Jeff Baker, CEO of Illinois REALTORS®, “and now we can show legislators that it should be the top policy priority. That’s not saying crime isn’t also still a high priority.”
