If you’re submitting your state or federal tax returns today, make sure you get to your local post office in time to get the April 15 postmark. Otherwise, you may face a fine from the Internal Revenue Service.

The USPS website notes that not all post offices will have extended hours.

Tax history

Many people know that the 13 colonies severed their ties with England on July 4, 1776 because of taxes, but it wasn’t until the 16th Amendment was passed in 1913 that Congress received the authority to levy taxes on corporate and individual income.

In January 1914, according to the IRS, the Treasury Department unveiled the Form 1040. Taxpayers filled them out and field agents reviewed them accuracy.  The agents then sent out bills on June 1 requiring tax payments by June 30.

Prohibition was enforced by the Bureau of Internal Revenue in 1919. For more information on the history of taxes and the IRS, check the IRS History Timeline.
