The Mid-Illinois Association of REALTORS® and Local Governmental Affairs Director (GAD) Kristie Engerman have used virtual meeting platforms to remain engaged with area leaders on issues like residential fire sprinkler requirements, sign ordinances, zoning and planning efforts and REALTOR® Party grant opportunities.

Bloomington-Normal area REALTORS® continue to promote positive change in business and public policy despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, REALTORS® discussed the review and adoption of the 2018 International Code Council’s family of codes with the city of Bloomington’s Community Development Department. Engerman and the REALTORS® reiterated their opposition to a residential fire sprinkler requirement that is part of the 2018 International Residential Code, citing private property rights and housing affordability concerns.

REALTOR® advocacy efforts during Bloomington’s previous code adoption cycle resulted in the city exempting the residential fire sprinkler requirement in new one- and two-family home construction. That exemption remains in place for the next version of the code which Bloomington is poised to adopt.

The association also hosted a separate virtual meeting with Normal town officials. REALTORS® will explore several grant opportunities with Normal, including the REALTOR® Party Smart Growth, Housing Opportunity and Placemaking Grant programs.
