Illinois First Lady Diana Rauner is board chair of the Illinois Executive Mansion Association, a private charitable corporation created to preserve and restore the “People’s House.” The fully private fundraising campaign will cover the estimated $15 million project, which is expected to be completed in time for the state’s 2018 bicentennial efforts near year. Among the project’s features, it will restore the original entrance to the Mansion to the north on Jackson Street, add LEED-certification and ADA accessibility to the home for the first time. The mansion has been the governor’s residence since 1855.
Mrs. Rauner thanked and recognized the Illinois REALTORS® for our part in the vision for the pedestrian walkway from Lincoln’s Home to the State Capitol and our partnership along with the City of Springfield in the neighborhood revitalization of our shared “Jackson Street Corridor.”
The Bicentennial Plaza – a REALTOR® Community Project – has been designated a “Legacy Project” by the Illinois Bicentennial Commission, which oversees the state’s plans for the milestone birthday. When completed summer 2018, the Bicentennial Plaza will feature historical murals depicting the history of the Civil Rights Movement, history of Illinois Executive Mansions and the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.
In addition to the Bicentennial Plaza, 25 local REALTOR® associations are “legacy projects” in their local communities. The “REALTORS with Heart” campaign our legacy bicentennial projects will help tell the bigger story of how “REALTORS® are leaders in their local communities, supporting local charities and causes, promoting economic development and a strong economy all while helping real estate buyers and sellers achieve the American Dream.”

The Illinois State Bicentennial officially begins on Dec. 3, 2017 with kick-off events in Springfield and Chicago. Dec. 3 marks the day in 1818 that Illinois became the 21st state in the Union.
