Join the 6.57 percent of Illinois REALTORS® who’ve already contacted their federal legislators and asked them to renew the National Flood Insurance Program with reforms. Take action now.

Last week, the NAR kicked off its Call for Action regarding the flood program. Despite technical difficulties, 5.83 percent of REALTORS® across the nation have responded, which means that Illinois members are ahead of the curve so far.

The flood program is scheduled to lapse on July 31, and if it isn’t renewed by then, many current and future homeowners could become vulnerable to financial catastrophe. Up to 5 million consumers in 22,000 communities could be affected. That could have a serious impact in the real estate market.

Since 1978, all but four Illinois counties have had paid claims through the flood program, and REALTORS® know that homeowners in many communities rely on flood insurance to protect their investments. If you haven’t participated yet, please contact your U.S. senators and representatives and urge them to extend and update the program.
