To celebrate the Illinois Bicentennial in 2018, the Livingston County Board of REALTORS®’ donated money and volunteers for landscaping restoration at the historic Jason Strevell House in Pontiac prior to its June 23 opening.
“Our association is proud to have this opportunity to celebrate the state’s birthday,” said Gina Manker, Livingston County association executive. “Our members work with heart in every part of our communities and make sure historic properties such as the Strevell House are preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
The local REALTOR® association secured a landscaping grant from the Illinois REALTORS® Bicentennial Committee. The grant money was used to buy period plants and flowers as well as a pole for the state and national flags. The house will be used as a museum and as a community gathering center, said Bob Sear, president of the Livingston County Historical Society.
REALTORS® worked with members of the historical society, City of Pontiac employees, Superior Landscaping employees and Pontiac Cemetery Sexton Jim Melvin, who oversees all city landscaping. Melvin approved the landscape design for Strevell House and coordinated the extra manual labor for the project. Restoration of Strevell House began about 10 years ago and was made possible by numerous donations of time, labor and money.
REALTORS® across the state are working with heart in their communities to complete projects like this to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. The Livingston County Board of REALTORS®’ project is one of 36 legacy projects supported by our 29 local REALTOR® associations.
Projects include fundraising for local historic home repairs and historical community murals or promoting local historical properties and societies. Illinois REALTORS® has donated land in downtown Springfield next to its headquarters to build Bicentennial Plaza – a REALTOR® Community Partnership, which is a signature project of the state bicentennial celebrations.
The association is an official endorsed partner with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission, which oversees the state’s plans for the milestone birthday.
