The threat of rent control is back in the Illinois General Assembly, as House Bill 255 has been referred back to the House Judiciary Civil Committee, according to the Feb. 7 edition of the Illinois State Capitol Report.

House Bill 255, which was defeated in 2019, sought to repeal the Rent Control Preemption Act. It is important to note that the Rent Control Preemption Act, enacted in 1997, was a legislative initiative of the Illinois REALTORS®. The Act prohibits a unit of local government from enacting, maintaining or enforcing an ordinance that would control the amount of rent charged for leasing private residential or commercial property.

Another bill that caught the attention of Illinois REALTORS® lobbyists during the past week was the reactivation of Senate Bill 1379. It would require annual reporting requirements for tax purposes on most income-producing properties in Cook County, while other counties would have the ability to opt in.
