For many prospective buyers, the path to homeownership may be closer than they think. The Southwestern Illinois Board of REALTORS® (SIBR) recently hosted “Making Ownership Possible: Affordable Housing Programs & Resources,” bringing practical tools and local expertise directly to area REALTORS®.

Supported by an Illinois REALTORS® Governmental Affairs Event Grant, the forum was held in partnership with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA), Madison County Community Development and St. Clair County Intergovernmental Grants.

Celeste Wheeler, chairwoman of SIBR’s Affordable Housing Committee, moderated a panel highlighting first-time homebuyer incentives, down payment assistance and programs that help current homeowners maintain their properties. More than 50 REALTORS® attended and learned how strategies such as “grant stacking” can help buyers overcome financial barriers.

The event was especially timely following Illinois REALTORS®’ successful advocacy for an additional $250 million in IHDA homebuying assistance in the state budget effective July 1, 2026.

Addressing housing affordability is critical to the future of our communities. REALTORS® understand the challenges facing buyers and stand ready to partner with local leaders to expand housing opportunities and make homeownership possible for more Illinois families.
