Show support for Hispanic Americans and learn about other cultures during Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Find events and activities in your local community by searching online using the words “Hispanic Heritage Month.”
The website “Choose Chicago” lists numerous activities in the Windy City, including special events at Wrigley Field with the Chicago Cubs, Guaranteed Rate Field with Chicago White Sox, the Field Museum, the Chicago History Museum and much more.
Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby has planned a variety of activities, including a Latino-inspired cooking demonstration, an explanation of Hispanic heritage and customs, a presentation on leadership and careers and a presentation on myths, facts and recent changes in the U.S. immigration system. Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has planned several events during the next month, including an appearance by civil rights advocate Eduardo Chavez at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11. Chavez will speak and present the documentary “Hailing Ceasar,” in an event sponsored by the Hispanic Student Council. He is the grandson of two civil rights activists, Cesar Chavez and Cuban revolutionary Max Lesnik. Learn more about this event and others.
The state of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) are hosting a virtual webinar at 10 a.m. on Sept. 20. The virtual webinar will provide information about programs for small businesses, including tax incentives, workforce, business assistance, funding and more. Latino Business Development Manager in DCEO’s Office of Minority Economic Empowerment, Diana Alfaro, leads the discussion.
