UPDATE: Illinois’ residential eviction moratorium was extended to Oct. 3 as Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a new executive order last Friday. The prohibition on the enforcement of eviction orders will continue through that date.
Several other executive orders were also renewed by virtue of Pritzker’s action, but they are extended through Oct. 16, 2021. They include mitigation measures, vaccinations, testing requirements and many others.

Pritzker breaks pledge, extends eviction moratorium again
Despite his pledge, Gov. J.B. Pritzker has quietly extended the state’s moratorium on evictions through Sept. 18. The Governor previously announced the moratorium would end Sept. 1. Now, the prohibition on enforcement of eviction orders will continue for about another month.
Pritzker announced earlier in May of this year that the moratorium on evictions would be “phased out” over the summer months and eventually end in August.
The Governor’s office reinforced this promise to housing providers again in July when he altered his executive orders to permit eviction filings on August 1. At the time, he encouraged those impacted by COVID-19 to apply for emergency rental relief assistance provided through the federal government and administered by the state and several cities and counties. The Governor’s office said that there will be no shortage of rental assistance funds. Deputy Governor Sol Flores said they “believe that the amount of federal stimulus that we have, will match the need that is out there.”
The Governor signed the new executive order extending the moratorium on Friday, August 20, however, did not provide any public announcement or explanation for the change.
