Earlier this year, the Illinois REALTORS® submitted written testimony to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). The testimony was a response to the FHFA’s request for information on appraisal-related policies, practices and processes.

The FHFA’s request for information, pointed out that “Recent articles indicate concerns with the undervaluation of residential property in minority communities.” This prompted Illinois REALTORS® to share steps taken and goals identified in Illinois to combat racial bias in appraisals.

In 2020, the Illinois REALTORS® created its Discriminatory Appraisals Task Force with a mission to:

  • Collect data and information about appraisal bias in Illinois.
  • Create and provide tools to Illinois REALTORS® and consumers about how to best navigate appraisals, the reconsideration of value process and appraiser oversight.
  • Propose and advocate for useful systemic changes that will create an equilibrium of fairness within the real estate transaction.

You can read Illinois REALTORS(R) submission and browse others on the FHFA’s website and learn more about the appraisal process on the Illinois REALTORS®’ Appraisal page.
