In another REALTOR® win, the Chicago city budget for 2026 has passed without a major property tax increase. Although he was opposed to this alternative budget, Mayor Brandon Johnson on Dec. 23 said he would not veto it, allowing the budget to go into effect.

“After a lot of drama and politicking, a budget has been passed without a major property tax increase. After our massive outreach campaign to defeat an increase in 2024, keeping property taxes in-check remained a major priority for our advocacy this year and beyond. Above all, this is a win for families across the city struggling with rising prices, with especially lean holiday budgets,” says Illinois REALTORS® Governmental Affairs Director Adriann Murawski.
