Gov. Pat Quinn announced Wednesday there will be an additional $5 million added to the Welcome Home Heroes Affordable Loan Program.

Quinn made the announcement during visits to families who had taken advantage of the program in Springfield and Midlothian. The program offers $10,000 in down payment assistance to veterans and active-duty service personnel.

According to the governor’s office, 1,150 service personnel and their families have benefitted from the program. The grants are available through the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

“Governor Quinn understands that a home purchase has a ripple economic impact for communities – creating jobs and increasing local revenue from property taxes and real estate taxes,” IHDA Executive Director Mary R. Kenney said.
