Illinois REALTORS® works to support political candidates on both sides of the political aisle who share the association’s commitment to private property rights and sound business practices. The association plays an extraordinary role in backing candidates in a number of primary races in the upcoming Nov. 6 elections, and working at the local level against several measures which would promote Home Rule in communities.
Support, which is in addition to direct RPAC contributions, comes in two forms:

Transfer Tax Refereda
Bannockburn and Evanston are seeking voter approval on transfer tax measures.
- Bannockburn officials want to impose a $1 per every $1,000 of a purchase price on a home sale.
- Evanston is seeking to increase a current transfer tax on properties valued between $1.5 and $5 million to $7 per thousand dollars of the sale price; and $9 per thousand dollars of the sale price for properties selling for more than $5 million.
Home Rule Referenda
Five Illinois communities are asking voters to give them Home Rule status, a measure which would mean elected officials would no longer have to go directly to voters to implement property tax increases. The communities are:
- Beach Park
- Prospect Heights
- Winthrop Harbor
