Gov. JB Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 1563 into law, making it easier to remove squatters who move in and try to occupy someone else’s home. Chicago Agent Magazine takes a closer look at the new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2026, in the article, “Squatter Bill becomes law, giving police more power to act.”
Illinois REALTORS® CEO Jeff Baker was asked what the law means for property owners:
“Among the many bills presented this year, SB 1563 brought back private property rights that had been methodically eroded over the years. As the leading voice for protecting homeowners and private property rights in Illinois, we were proud to see this bill get across the finish line,” he said.
