Illinois REALTORS® can commemorate Fair Housing Month in April by sharing a link to the video “Seven Days” with their clients and potential customers.

The YouTube video, produced by Nationwide Insurance and the National Fair Housing Alliance, tells the story of how the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson a week after the assassination (April 4) of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  It was a time of great civil unrest in the United States, with riots in more than 100 cities, including the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.

The National Fair Housing Alliance was founded in 1988 and dedicated to ending discrimination in housing. According to nationalfairhousing.org, the alliance is a consortium of more than 220 private, non-profit housing organizations, state and local civil rights agencies, and individuals throughout the country.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development offers more information on the history of fair housing in the United States.
