State Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, speaks to Illinois REALTORS® attending IAR Public Policy Meetings this week.

State Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, welcomed REALTORS® to his hometown as part of the Illinois Association of REALTORS® Public Policy Meetings held Jan. 22-23.

Topping his list of things to address was the state’s perilous financial situation. Unes said Illinois has nearly $9 billion in unpaid bills, the fallout from a budget deficit that continues to snowball.

“Imagine what that’s doing to the most vulnerable among us,” Unes told a packed room at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center.

Unes said he was very concerned about the impact of unfunded mandates. He noted he served on the East Peoria City Council, a post that gave him insight into how municipalities are struggling.

Unes pointed to his work to pass a bill addressing copper theft as evidence of his work to help REALTORS®.
