Illinoisans are paying an average of $281 a month in total energy costs, according to a study by the personal finance website WalletHub.

Using a formula that combines monthly energy costs for homes (electric, natural gas and heating oil) and motor fuel, Illinois had the seventh lowest in the nation, reported WalletHub in the study named “2019’s Most & Least Energy-Expensive States.” Connecticut had the highest monthly costs ($373), while the District of Columbia was the lowest ($204).

The energy costs in midwestern states bordering Illinois included: Iowa ($286, 10th lowest), Wisconsin ($293, 18th), Michigan ($303, 27th), Missouri ($317, 36th) and Indiana ($333, 46th).
