William Wald, Senior Director of Business and Professional Development, Chicago Association of REALTORS®

We’re in high gear preparing for “Heroes Welcome Home,” a professional development program hosted by the Chicago Association of REALTORS® to help real estate practitioners effectively counsel veterans and their families on real estate options.

The program, held May 25-26 at the Chicago Marriott O’Hare, will address the most common physical and cognitive disabilities sustained by soldiers in today’s wars. It will also cover real estate-specific issues, most of which are unfamiliar territory to veterans, such as mortgage options available to veterans and how to locate community-based rehab resources.

We are excited to have a veteran on board as a keynote speaker: Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Daniel Grant recently confirmed he will speak at the program on May 25. Other top-notch program participants leading educational sessions will include experts from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Army, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Support Center, Access Living and Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

“Heroes Welcome Home” is currently a pilot project developed by the Chicago Association of REALTORS® with funding awarded by the National Association of REALTORS® “Game Changers” initiative to identify new ways to approach the business of real estate. It’s our hope that “Heroes” will be successful and go on to inspire other new programs like it nationwide.

If you can be in Chicago on May 25-26, please join us. Today’s veterans include thousands of people who’ve returned from places such as Iraq and Afghanistan with life-altering injuries and limited experience re-integrating into civilian communities and possibly purchasing a home.  The least we can do is take care of them by serving as educated, well-connected and reliable resources.

CAR thanks its partner organizations for their support of the program: Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS®, North Shore-Barrington Association of REALTORS® and the REALTOR® Association of NorthWest Chicagoland.
