Faced with the question of choosing which tax break they would want to see protected over others, Americans chose the mortgage interest deduction over several other popular deductions including one for charitable giving, according to a new poll by the Christian Science Monitor.

The poll asked people which tax deduction they would be willing to eliminate and gave them five options: Charitable giving, mortgage interest, state taxes paid, employer-sponsored health insurance and retirement savings. Respondents said they would be willing to give up tax breaks for charitable giving and state taxes before eliminating the mortgage interest deduction.
