The Illinois Association of REALTORS® is among 240 organizations seeking to bring the state’s communications laws into the 21st century.
The association was among those represented at a announcement on April 30 regarding the state’s communications law which expires on June 30, 2015. State lawmakers have the opportunity to keep an existing law that is a throwback to the days when landlines were the most common way to communicate.
Among issues the members of the Illinois Partnership for the New Economy and Jobs see with keeping existing rules in place:
- The current law requires investment in rotary dial technology when 82 percent of those living in Illinois are using a cable-based or cellular link to the world.
- The alteration of the current law could spur job growth.
IAR was joined by organizations such as the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois State Medical Society and the Illinois Municipal League. It also has backing from businesses such as AT&T and Northern Trust, among others.
The coalition states that it is in support of maintaining home telephone service to all in the state, and that the changes would make it possible to upgrade and invest in modern wire and high-speed Internet networks.
