On Friday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development charged Facebook with creating advertising tools that enabled housing discrimination by landlords and home sellers.

The tools enable advertisers to control who sees housing information based on “race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, disability, and/or zip code,” according to HUD.

In “HUD Secretary Ben Carson accuses Facebook of enabling housing discrimination,” the Chicago Tribune reported the complaint starts a process that could result in a federal lawsuit against Facebook. The article also states that the U.S. Justice Department supported several fair housing groups as they opposed Facebook’s efforts to have discrimination lawsuits dismissed. Find out what this case says about the immunity provided by the Communications Decency Act for companies like Facebook.
