The once-a-decade rewrite of the state’s Real Estate License Act is still more than a year away, but Illinois REALTORS® is working on suggestions to make the law better for members and consumers alike.
Three association members are spearheading subcommittees working on various aspects of the bill. They serve as leaders on the Illinois REALTORS® License Law Rewrite Task Force, which is led by association Past President Doug Carpenter.
The subcommittee leaders are:
- Michael Oldenettel: Leads the subcommittee on business issues. Oldenettel is a former association president.
- Sue Miller: Heads the subcommittee focusing on education. She is treasurer nominee for the association.
- Nykea Pippion-McGriff: Heads the subcommittee tasked with reviewing regulatory and enforcement issues. She is a nominee for the association’s 2019 Board of Directors.
RELA, as it is known, comes up for legislative consideration in the 2019 session of the Illinois General Assembly, with an expected implementation of 2020. The rewrite process allows the act to be freshened and refined to meet a rapidly changing marketplace and industry.
Task force subcommittee meetings will begin this month to round out suggestions for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which oversees compliance with RELA, and the members of the General Assembly, who must vote on any changes to the act.
The four leaders are working with dozens of Illinois REALTORS® who have been appointed to the subcommittees to craft suggestions. The subcommittees are also reviewing feedback from association members from throughout the state.
