Housing providers need to remind their tenants that Sunday is the last day to apply for rental assistance. Then, late next week landlords and tenants are expected to hear that the ban on filing evictions for those negatively impacted by COVID-19 could end on Aug. 1.
According to a press release issued today, the governor is expected to issue a new Executive Order on July 23 that will end the moratorium on filing evictions against “covered persons,” or those negatively impacted by COVID-19, on Aug. 1. While landlords could no longer be prohibited from filing evictions against those tenants, the new Executive Order could still prohibit the enforcement of eviction orders until the end of August.
While this could signal an end to the statewide moratorium, landlords should be advised to check for any existing local requirements and ordinances that may extend beyond the statewide moratorium.
Renters are urged to apply by the end of the day on Sunday, July 18 for the current round of assistance available through the Illinois Rental Payment Program (ILRPP). An additional round of aid might be available in the fall.
