In the last decade, Illinois’ population grew 3.3 percent to 12,830,632, according to the latest U.S. Census data. But even more interesting is which areas saw the biggest gains, primarily the suburban Chicagoland counties outside of Cook County.

The biggest gain was in Kendall County, which saw its population jump 110 percent between 2000 and 2010.

The census data revealed other demographic shifts including strong gains by the state’s Hispanic population which grew by 32.5 percent and now accounts for 15.8 percent of the state’s total population.
